debbie&andrew's donated to Tunbridge Wells based charity Build Africa. The charity was presented a cheque for £2,700

Kent sausage manufacturer debbie&andrew’s has donated £2,700 to local charity Build Africa.

An on-pack awareness campaign across debbie&andrew’s range of sausages led to the donation.

It will pay for the construction of kitchen facilities at the Kawo Kakira school in Uganda, enabling the school to provide its 445 children with a hot meal made from produce grown in the school’s garden.

On receiving the cheque Sonja Lawrence, philanthropy and partnerships executive at Build Africa said: “Pupils’ lack of access to food is a critical issue for the Kawo Kakira school, and has been hampering attendance and performance levels in class.

"Although we established a school garden last year, the school was short on the equipment needed to turn that home grown produce into a meal for pupils.

"Thanks to the kind donation from debbie&andrew’s, the school will be able to provide each pupil with a hot meal, alleviating hunger and aiding their ability to concentrate and learn throughout the day."

Build Africa’s projects include practical lessons on agricultural issues such as crop rotation and drought management.

Pupils are also able to pass on best practice to their parents, increasing production in the region.

Gen Geary from debbie&andrew’s said: “debbie&andrew’s is committed to supporting rural communities, both in the UK and further afield.

"Good quality, home grown nutrition is at the heart of what we do here and we appreciate its importance in maintaining a healthy lifestyle and building strong agricultural communities.

"So we are naturally delighted to be able to help a local charity that brings this ethos to rural communities across the world.”
