Demolition of Cranbrook Engineering approved by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council

A troubled project to transform Cranbrook’s town centre is back on track.

A Tunbridge Wells Borough Council planning meeting on Wednesday approved applications to demolish nine buildings and stabilise a 10th listed range at the site of the former Cranbrook Engineering furniture store on Stone Street.

The work will pave the way for a £20 million regeneration, bringing new shops, offices and homes to the area as well as a £2 million community centre opposite in Wilkes Field.

Work to deliver the scheme was plagued by set backs and in March TWBC issued an 11th hour demolition prevention notice citing potential historical significance.

Following an extensive archeological survey carried out by Historic England the authority ruled in June that the brick range, which dates back to the 1500s, should be given a Grade II listing due to its merits and the fact it sits near many other listed buildings, including the adjacent Grade II* George Hotel.

A full report will appear in Friday's Kent Messenger.
