Mascalls Academy students and staff taken to hospital after gas leak at their hotel in Isla, Spain

Around a dozen children and teachers from Mascalls Academy were taken to hospital following a suspected carbon monoxide leak at their hotel in northern Spain.

The pupils from the secondary in Paddock Wood were on the last day of a school trip and staying at the Hotel Campomar in Isla, a small village near Santander when the alarm was raised yesterday.

All those affected have been given a clean bill of health and were due to arrive back in the UK this morning.

Wayne Barnett, the principal at Mascalls Academy, said: "Parents of the affected students were notified immediately yesterday when the incident occurred and were kept updated on progress throughout the day of any developments.

"The academy will be conducting a post-incident review next week and therefore have no further information to add at this stage."

"All students and staff are due back in the UK this morning following an otherwise positive trip."

According to The Telegraph, 54 children were staying on the first floor of the hotel when the leak happened.

In total 28 people were taken to hospital with five reported to be seriously injured.

Mascalls Academy, in Maidstone Road, is run by the Leigh Academies Trust.
