Hawkhurst: Chelsea-Rose Betts becomes third person to die after crash on Rye Road

A third person has died after a horror crash in Hawkhurst on Saturday night.

It has been confirmed that after three days of fighting for her life at King's College Hospital, Chelsea-Rose Betts has now sadly died.

The 16-year-old was flown to the London hospital after the red Volvo estate car she was travelling in smashed into a wall on the A268 Rye Road, near the junction with Foxhole Lane on Saturday night.

Two men, 44-year-old Roy Little from Sandhurst and 50-year-old Stephen Jones from North Wales, died at the scene.

Another teenager and a man were also taken to hospital, but were later released.

The teenager was Chelsea-Rose's brother, who suffered a broken collarbone and broken ribs.

The road was closed for several hours, and floral tributes have been left at the scene.

Racheal Betts, Chelsea-Rose's mother, said: "We all feel numb. She was such a lovely girl and will be sadly missed. There will be so many things we will never see her do."

Tributes on the teenager's Facebook page have paid tribute to a "gorgeous and bubbly girl".

One post, believed to be from the 16-year-old's cousin, said: "We grew up so close and I never thought I'd have to say goodbye, you will always be with us no matter what.

"You were way too young to be taken from this world. I am heartbroken, but you fought until the end and that's all you could do.

"You will forever be in my heart, I love you more than you'll ever know."

Kent Police has renewed its appeal for witnesses to the crash.

Anyone with information who has not yet spoken to police is asked to call 01622 798538 or email sciu.td@kent.pnn.police.uk quoting reference DK/BG/214/17.

A full tribute and report of the incident will appear in the Weald edition of tomorrow's Kent Messenger.
