Tributes paid to Jean Austin, former deputy head of Mascalls School in Paddock Wood

Tributes are pouring in for a "fabulous lady" and former deputy head of a Kent school who has died at the age of 88.

Jean Austin taught PE and English at Mascalls School in Paddock Wood during the 1950s through to 1988. During this time she also served as deputy head.

Former pupils and staff members have shared fond memories of her "formidable" character and warm personality following her death last week.

The school, based in Maidstone Road, posted a heart-warming image on its Facebook page and offered its condolences to Mrs Austin's family.

Christine Yates wrote: "Oh I'm so sad. She was amazing. A real character so many stories passed down the ranks. Genuinely gutted.

"She was a gutsy funny lady who knew all the tricks in the book to get the very best out of her students. Especially getting her naughty boys out of bed to school in the morning!!! Sleep well Mrs Austin."

David Green added: "Very sad news. Mrs Austin was a lovely lady and a wonderful teacher and leader. Very old school, disciplined well with high expectations of everyone - but very much a kind and compassionate woman too. May she rest in peace."
