Weald sixth form students celebrate A-level success

Thousands of pupils discovered their long-awaited A-level results today. Here's a round-up of Weald schools.

Cranbrook School headmaster John Weeds said he was “absolutely delighted” with his students results. He said: “It is one of our best years and is a reflection of the exceptionally hard work put in by both staff and students to sustain such high standards.”

Out of 154 candidates from the Upper Sixth Form, 89% gained A* to Cs, with 9% gaining A*s.

Will Moody from Cranbrook achieved 4A*s, and Neils Behling from Goudhurst 3A*s and an A.

Five students have already secured an Oxbridge place and two others are waiting to hear.

The school’s AS results were the second best ever, according to deputy head John Russell. He said: “With the abolition of January exams this year, we had been bracing ourselves for a possible dip in results, but in fact the number gaining A* to B grades improved. It’s a tribute to our own internal testing.”

Bethany School pupils achieved the highest number of top grades in the school’s history. Year 13 pupils are celebrating an impressive set of examination results with a 98% pass rate, with 83% of which being A* to C.

Amelia Howell achieved outstanding grades of A*, A*, A is off to Loughborough University to study Information Management and Business; Nathaniel Marshall achieved three As and will read Business Management at Lancaster University; Sam Watts achieved A*, A, A to study Environmental Geography at East Anglia University and Will Scott has secured a place to study Classical Guitar at the prestigious Royal College of Music in London.

Headmaster Francie Healy said: “This has been a tremendous year for Bethany School and these results are the icing on the cake for these pupils who have worked incredibly hard alongside our committed staff.”

Out of the 160 students to sit A-level exams at Tunbridge Wells Grammar School for Boys, in St John’s Road, 157 have achieved A* to C grades. The overall pass rate was 99% with 86% marked at C or above. James Palmer secured four A*s and classmates Janic Holzer and James Pearson both celebrated three A*s.

Headteacher John Harrison said: “I am so pleased for the students. The challenge of A-levels is significant and the outstanding grades achieved by the students this year are a just reward for their hard work during. It has been particularly pleasing to see an increase in our A and A* grades.

"I am certain the young men and women leaving us today will now progress to employment and university placements ready and able to take advantage of the opportunities that will come their way. We wish them every success in the future.”

The outgoing principal of the High Weald Academy in Cranbrook, Robert Jackson, congratulated his students on an impressive set of results - with an 11% improvement in the average point score over last year. Mr Jackson retires this term and hands over the reins to Carrie Beech from September.

Overall 52% of students achieved a grade A* - C in their A Levels.

BTEC students secured 100% pass rate across all subjects with 48% receiving a Distinction or Distinction*.

Mr Jackson said: “I wish to thank both the students and the staff for their hard work. It is particularly gratifying to see such strong results in my last year as principal.”

The top performers included Ben O’Donnell who redesigned the academy’s website last year. He gained a Distinction in BTEC ICT and a Distinction* in BTEC Business and Hospitality and is going on to Kingston University to study Computer Science.

Jessica Geary received three A Levels, including an A in English Language, a B in Photography and a C in Art. Jessica will continue her studies in English Language and Linguistics at university.

Maria Pereira currently training with the England Karate team gained a Distinction* in BTEC Hospitality, ICT and Public Services and is going to Canterbury Christ Church University to study Crime and Policing.

Staff and students at Mascalls celebrated a record year, with exam results improving in every category. More than half of the A-level students achieved grades B and above contributing to an overall pass rate of 99.1%. AS results were also up at the Maidstone Road school, in Paddock Wood with those getting top grades almost doubling last year's efforts.

Headteacher Stuart Reeves said: “We are absolutely delighted with these results, especially in a year when there has been a fall in grades nationally.This is due to the sheer hard work and determination of both students and staff. I congratulate each and every one of them.”

Among the star performers were Emma Boxall who achieved three A*s, Tim Brewer with two A*s and an A, Katie Allen who received two A*s and an A and Cat Allan with three A*s and an A.

The Skinners’ School in St John’s Road, Tunbridge Wells, achieved 88% of A* to C grades with 17% marked as A*. In total, 119 pupils sat the A-level exams.
