Comedian Vic Reeves' artworks go on show ahead of a sale at Westenhanger Auction

He’s known for telling gags with his partner in comedy, Bob Mortimer.

However, TV comic Vic Reeves is also well known for his art.

Damien Hirst, one of the many collectors of his work, once said of him that “talent oozes from his fingertips”.

Like his off-the-wall comic turns, Vic, whose real name is Jim Moir, uses surrealism and controversy in his art.

But he also manages to raise a chuckle, as art agent, antiques expert and long-time friend Michael Hogben testifies.

“You don’t have to buy his work to come in and view it. We are a fine art auction room and I’ll be there and hear someone burst out laughing. I’ll think ‘What’s happened there?’. And then I realise someone’s seen one of his paintings!”

Michael describes his friend’s work as eclectic and unique.

“He is one of those unique artists. He has always been interested in antiques and art. He’s a bit of an antiques expert himself now – I’ve taught him everything I know! His pictures do make people laugh.”

Some 50 colourful lots feature a diverse range of subjects from Michael Jackson to Noel Edmonds to some cartoon-style scenes with speech bubbles and other more traditional works, as well as pottery creations.

“Vic has been enjoying a recent spurt of inspiration, which along with his heavy schedule of television and radio work has resulted in some of his finest and occasionally most avant garde work,” said Michael.
