Boeing Boeing: Take off without a hitch at Medway Little Theatre

The Medway Little Theatre lives up to its name; very little and very theatrical. In a single room, with perhaps no more than 12 rows of seating, you become part of perhaps one of the strangest am-dram experiences in Kent.

Boeing Boeing is a fairly standard sixties comedy expertly squeezed onto a tiny stage and filled full of some of the best accents, mannerisms and line delivery theatre has to offer.

The farce itself centres around a slightly sleazy Parisian and his secret polygamy with three air hostesses; German Gretchen, American Gloria and the French Gabrielle. When his buffoonish friend comes in from the suburbs, chaos ensues in the wake of a change of flight schedules and absurd mix-ups.

What really stands out about this production is not so much the play itself: it showcases the group’s brilliant comedic ability and character range.

The character of Robert is particularly well played; he evolves fluently from a bashful, sweet traditional man into an irresistible sexual maniac.

The cast perfectly echoes the absurdity of both their setting and the plot, their loud, inexhaustible appeal leaving this little theatre’s audience captivated and in hysterics.

This isn’t something I’d recommend to anyone particularly uncomfortable with sixties sexism and stereotypes: but nonetheless it is riotously performed, brilliantly executed and the set is totally believeable.

If you are looking for an edge-of-your seat problem comedy, this is definitely for you. No sooner has one door closed another one opens; with the arrival of a new short-skirted problem.

Right up until the final line you are not sure how it will end: I wouldn’t dare ruin it for you, so lets just say it’s very well deserved for our two misbehaving men.

The character of Gabrielle had me wondering for most of the play whether she was actually French; every mannerism and phoneme was utterly convincing; you didn’t believe for one minute she wasn’t an exhausted fiancé just hoping for a peaceful marriage.

Gretchen was similarly fascinating, although in full sixties fashion about as PC as Katie Hopkins; raucous, highly emotional and just a little bit loopy. She is still fabulously honest and a real joy to watch.

Gloria is a slightly mismatched anti-feminist satire, but she still manages to pull off the stereotypical loud-mouth American flawlessly. And of course the maid; strong estuary accented and highly intelligent, she has the rest of the characters in the palm of her hand. Her dry humour and manipulation is the highlight of the play.

This is one of the best things am-dram has to offer; intelligent, perfectly acted and smoothly delivered with fantastic costuming, this is a highly enjoyable evening out for anyone in need of a laugh.

Occasionally for a modern viewer, the macho attitudes and assertion of control can be a tad unlikable "It is a man's place to make the decisions!" but this is overrun by the talent of the cast to make the characters appear as bizarre as possible.

Full praise to the Medway Little Theatre.
