Britelite, the windows, doors and conservatory specialist, shares advice on how to bring your home out of hibernation

Anyone who has paid good money for new windows, doors or a conservatory will want to make the most of them by looking after them correctly.

While glass can usually be brought back to life with a traditional glass cleaner, cleaning UPVC frames requires a little more caution as it is important not to use anything abrasive which will scratch the surface and consequently trap in more dirt.

You can keep your frames looking pristine by washing them with a mild solution of washing up liquid while stubborn marks that really won’t shift can be lightly rubbed with a cream cleaner – although try to avoid doing this on every occasion as it can remove the shine.

Households which have aluminium window frames can keep them looking shiny and new with mild dishwashing soap, a soft cloth, warm water and a bit of elbow grease. And to ensure that hard work isn’t wasted with the sudden appearance of streaky marks, always dry the windows thoroughly when you are finished.

'Maintaining the value of your conservatory involves maintaining its condition'

Maintaining the value of your conservatory involves maintaining its condition. Gutters need to be cleaned and debris removed while the roof will also be deserving of a good wash to make sure small particles of dirt do not build up over time, which will not only become difficult to shift but also reduce the amount of light being let into your conservatory.

To clean your gutters ensure the ladder you use is high enough to comfortably reach the guttering while not leaning against it, which would risk breaking or fracturing it.

You can remove any debris you see - such as leaves, twigs and moss - using a gutter scoop, small trowel or even a large kitchen spoon.

Cleaning the guttering also allows you to give it a quick quality inspection and if any damage is spotted, endeavour to repair it as soon as possible.

Like the windows in your home, the glass in your conservatory will also become dirty so clean the panels regularly, again with a glass cleaner, while the frames should be tackled with the correct method depending on the type of material used.

And if locks are proving sticky treat them, and any other metal surfaces around the windows and doors, twice a year with WD40 to ensure they turn smoothly.
