Chatham-based Copper Rivet Distillery makes a Wimbledon inspired cocktail to honour the fortnight

New balls please - but make them cannon balls.

The Copper Rivet Distillery in Chatham has created a special cocktail in honour of Wimbledon but given it a battle theme, in honour of Upnor Castle which stands on the opposite bank of the River Medway.

The castle, part of the recent Battle of Medway 350th anniversary celebrations, was originally the largest gunpowder store in Britain.

For Wimbledon, head distiller Abhi Bhanik has blended this award-winning Vela Vodka – well iced – in a simple Wimbledon-inspired cocktail - with a hint of syrup, two drops of Smoked Bitters and a twist of lemon, and named it Chatham Top Spin.

The recently-opened distillery in Pumphouse No. 5, a Grade II listed Victorian building at Chatham Maritime, has already won the top Double Gold Award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Co-owner Stephen Russell said: "The link between tennis and cannon balls mirrors the real story in Shakespeare’s Henry 5th, in which the son of the King of France rudely sends King Henry a tun of tennis balls instead of the gold or the French Dukedoms which he believed he was owed.

"King Henry promised gun-stones (cannonballs) instead – and duly won at Agincourt."
