Seaside days out in Kent including the Folkestone Trawler Race and Bayfest in Herne Bay

IT’S JOUST THE JOB

Flags will be flying as medieval merriment comes to Dover Castle this weekend. The castle’s first Grand Medieval Joust will be on Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 13, when highly-skilled knights will square up to each other in a series of bouts throughout the day, lances poised.

There will also be a packed programme of entertainment, including pageantry, medieval cooking and carpentry, plus visitors can learn about the gruesome job of a medieval surgeon.

The court jester will also be there to amuse the crowds and for little ones there’s hobby horse jousting. Events run from 10am to 5pm both days. A family ticket costs £56.50, £22.40 for adults and £14.20 for children.

JUMP AROUND

This is one event guaranteed to put a spring in your step.

The world’s biggest bouncy castle arrives at Dreamland in Margate this weekend for a two-week stay.

Created by the teams at House of Bestival and Something Creatives, the castle stands at almost 13 metres at its highest point, and is suitable for both adults and children. The mammoth inflatable, which is filled with 1,143 cubic metres of air and measures 21 metres square, can comfortably take 100 people bouncing at the same time!

Chris Snelson from Dreamland said: “Whether you’re a family or even on a company day out – imagine jumping around with up to 99 other people – it’s going to be so much fun.”

It will be at the recently revamped Dreamland from Saturday, August 12 until Saturday, August 26. Open from 11.30am each day, a 10-minute bounce costs £3.50.

Booking in advance is recommended at dreamland.co.uk

THERE'S SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON

The annual Folkestone Trawler Race weekend comes to the seaside town on Saturday, August 12 and Sunday, August 13. The fun runs from 10am on the Saturday through to 6pm on the Sunday, with funfair rides and attractions throughout both days.

There will also be the race itself around 1.30pm on the Saturday, a raft race and on the Sunday, a fish pie contest, opposite the Mariners pub on The Stade, and judged by, among others, TV chef Mark Sargeant from nearby Rocksalt.

The aim of the weekend is to highlight the town’s fishing heritage and supporting local fishermen. Lifeboats, live music, National CoastWatch and food stalls will be on offer throughout. The fun is free to watch and enjoy.

SEASIDE FUN AND GAMES

Herne Bay’s seaside festival is back with a bang with a new name, BayFest. The community-run festival runs throughout August, and it is now into its second weekend.

On Saturday, August 12, the Herne Bay Carnival takes to the streets and there’s a sandcastle competition on Herne Bay Beach on Tuesday, August 15.

You can register for the sandcastle contest at the beach area west of the pier. All ages and abilities can take part and this year there’s a competition for dads and granddads that runs until 4.30pm. If you don't want to get sand between your toes, don't forget your line and bucket for a spot of crabbing from the pier.
