Veganuary in Kent: Six vegan offerings to try during Veganuary from Whitstable to Folkestone and Maidstone

There’s Dry January, and now there’s also Veganuary.

There are many reasons people decide to try vegan – a love of animals; thinking about the impact we make on the world; setting a challenge, and seeing it as a healthy start to the year.

Here’s six vegan offerings in Kent to try:

1. The Skinny Kitchen, Canterbury

The restaurant for those who want to eat clean has a carefully marked menu so you know exactly what you’re getting – whether you want vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free. With its 4.5 rating out of 5 on Trip Advisor, it offers a recently launched Bottomless Brunch, which includes vegan pancakes.

2. Food For Thought, Cranbrook

This little cafe with vegan options specialises in providing the best quality seasonal food, home cooked, freshly-made meals with locally sourced ingredients.

3. Potato Tomato, Whitstable

The 100% vegan establishment has two outlets in the town: The Hut in the Harbour and the Eatery in the High Street. The Hut has cruelty-free fast food goodies, even burgers and the Eatery has contemporary vegan cuisine with brunch and lunch five days a week and Saturday evenings.

4. Ponga Foods, Drakes, Maidstone

Vegan chef, Stephanie Hinton launched the food line at the popular pub last year having previously worked at Fortify Cafe in the town, and before that at Jamie’s Italian in Shepherds Bush and for MasterChef’s John Torode. She specialises in vegan cheeses, gluten free and regularly changes the menu. The next launches on Tuesday, January 16.

5. Wallflower Cafe, Herne Bay

This formerly vegetarian Herne Bay café went all-vegan a year ago. The plant based cafe has healthy dishes such as falafel plates, soups, and salads but also treats such as cakes and sundaes and has a focus on clean, healthy food that is locally sourced and freshly made.

6. Beano’s Vegetarian Cafe Bar, Folkestone

Situated in the heart of the Creative Quarter, this relaxed, family-run vegetarian restaurant in Folkestone has lots of vegan options. Dishes range from full breakfasts to pizzas and Mexican food and there’s snacks and eat-in or takeaway, plus hot drinks including loose leaf herbal tea. There’s a courtyard garden for warmer days and free wi-fi.
