Maidstone Proms in the Park 2016 to honour the Queen's 90th birthday and the late Jeffrey Vaughan Martin

Maidstone's popular Proms in the Park this weekend will mark the Queen's 90th birthday and honour one of the town's leading musical contributors, Jeffrey Vaughan Martin, who died last month.

The event, which runs from 2pm on Saturday, May 28, will feature a schedule of events that pay tribute to the Queen, with Maidstone Wind Symphony taking to the stage at 6pm and perform until the close at 8pm, led by musical director Jonathan Crowhurst.

The music will include classic proms music from each decade of Her Majesty’s lifetime.

Following the death of former Maidstone Singers musical director, Jeffrey Vaughan Martin, organisers have also chosen to honour him.

Jonathan said: “Everybody is excited about the event and we can’t wait to take to the stage at Proms in the Park. Of course, while we are looking forward to dedicating our performance to the Queen’s 90th birthday, it goes without saying that this year’s event is dedicated just as much to Jeffrey Vaughan Martin and his family.

“It is difficult to overstate Jeffrey's contribution to youth and community music in Maidstone. Many Maidstone Wind Symphony players owe much of their musical grounding to Jeffrey and the organisations and ensembles he founded and championed. It’s only fitting, therefore, that we pay tribute to his work and legacy.”

There will also be roaming entertainment through the day, with magician Adam Hoffman and on stage performances from the Hazlitt Youth Theatre, Maidstone Singers, Energize community choir, Invicta Jazz and Rochester Choral Society Chamber Choir.
