Review: Fantastic Mr Fox at the Orchard Theatre, Dartford

Chances are you're familiar with the antics of greedy farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean and the heroics of Fantastic Mr Fox - or at least the names ring a bell.

Now, the classic Roald Dahl tale has been brought to the stage.

I remember reading the book as a child and, as my little girl has just read it with her class at school, it seemed the perfect time for a mum and daughter trip to see the new theatre version.

I always wonder if stories we enjoy reading and the characters we create in our minds can ever be as good when they're adapted for stage or screen - but this production proves they can.

The action packed musical about a group of animals' fight for survival has been brought to life as part of events marking the 100th anniversary of the famous author's birth.

Adapter Sam Holcroft has admitted it was a very daunting experience to do justice to the book, but her witty script along with catchy songs, by composer Arthur Darvill, certainly capture the audience from the start.

Greg Barnett brings just the right amount of swagger and self-confidence to Mr Fox as he learns the importance of teamwork and sharing.

While Sandy Foster as rabbit and Gruffudd Glyn, who plays mole and Bunce, provide lots of laughs.

The tiered revolving stage adds to the spectacle of this show that works for children and adults alike - my eight your old gave it five stars and a big thumbs up.

Fantastic Mr Fox is on at the Orchard Theatre, Dartford until Sunday, March 5.
