Faversham: The English Strawberry Fair comes to Brogdale

Taste the first blush of summer as the fruits of the season burst out at Brogdale near Faversham this weekend.

All things quintessentially English are celebrated at the English Strawberry Fair with plenty of chances to set your taste buds off with rare and heritage strawberries - best enjoyed with plenty of cream.

The fair offers dozens of varieties of the fruit grown at Brogdale, including the Brogdale Delicious, a tiny alpine Reine Des Vallees and Mariguette strawberries. There's also the Snow White strawberry, a white fleshed red pip strawberry that stands out from the crowd.

Join in some traditional fair games like the strawberry spoon race, sack racing and tug of war, or make fruit kebabs in the kids' cookery sessions and listen to traditional storytelling under the trees.

Little ones can get stuck into strawberry crafts and discover where all the magical strawberry fairies have hidden their fairy doors on the farm.

Visitors can also join a guided walking or tractor trailer tour around the orchards, as they burst in to life. The site has 150 acres of fruit orchards and tours take you on a journey around the collection discovering the seasonal highlights and peak fruiting areas of the orchards. You could also take a ride through the orchards on the Faversham miniature railway.

On a Sunday summer's afternoon take a cream tea in the Strawberry Tea Room where tea is served with homemade cake, fresh scones or fresh strawberries and cream - or sip strawberry Pimm’s on the meadow with your picnic and your choice of fresh strawberries whist listening to the Abbey Ukulele Club.

You can also meet Carlos the goat and other animals, watch cooking demonstrations and rural talks such as finding out about beekeeping with Canterbury Beekeepers and encouraging wildlife into your garden.
