There’s lots of banter in the kmfm studio as old friends Garry Wilson and Emma Adam prepare to join forces on kmfm Breakfast.

“She’ll be rampaging into the show like a blonde Godzilla,” says host Garry, who has been flying solo up to now.

“It’s been fine doing the show by myself but it’ll keep it even more interesting to co-host with Emma. You never know what hair colour she’s going to have, for a start – one day it’s brunette, another day pink, blonde, root-sy...”

Newcomer to kmfm Breakfast Emma, who is already well-known to listeners for presenting the afternoon slot, is quick to shoot back: “For my part, I’m looking forward to putting Garry on a fresh broccoli juice diet. I’ll be trying to look after him in the old healthy eating department. Although I do enjoy baking so I might bring in the odd slice of homemade lemon drizzle cake but he’ll have to earn his treats – like a puppy dog.”

Garry knows that he’s met his match in sparring partner Emma, and that’s just the way he wants it.

“Emma’s not here to laugh at my jokes and then give the travel news – she’s a strong personality in her own right,” says the Medway-based dad-of-three.

“I’ve been 100% funny, but now Emma can be 50% funny and I can ease back.”

In reality, easing back is not a phrase this pair understand. Emma, who lives in Sevenoaks with her partner, Jay, and two daughters aged five and seven, said: “I’ll be getting up at 3.35am and we’ll be on air from 5.30am.

“I’m often awake at weird times in the night, so I thought I might as well get up and do something useful!

“My girls will be having their breakfast at home with dad and listening to me on the radio, and then I’ll be back in plenty of time to meet them from school.”

A hectic family life is something the duo have in common and they both know the countywide kmfm patch like the back of their hands, thanks to regular family days out to attractions including Kent Life, Chatham Historic Dockyard, Dover Castle, Whitstable harbour and Bluewater, among others.

Describing family life, Garry says: “I’ve got a little boy of two and six-year-old twin daughters, so there’s a lot of Disney in our house.”

Emma butts in: “Just don’t ask his wife, Jodie, about his DIY...”

She’s referring to an incident which has become the stuff of urban legend in the studio.

Garry is forced to explain: “I may have got a small electric shock whilst fitting a light. Emma’s just jealous because it gave me superpowers. But I think our strengths will complement each other.”

Emma can’t resist. “Yes. I’ve got strong arms, you like to think you’ve got powerful legs, so between us we’d make a perfect pantomime horse. That bodes well, as long as you know that if you step out of line I will be putting you in your place.”

The shared sense of humour means the pair enjoy natural on-air chemistry.

“She is the voice of reason should I wander off in strange directions,” concedes Garry.

“We just enjoy talking about quirky news stories or the celebrity world, and we’re able to get the Kent stories that others don’t because we’re part of the KM Group.”

Emma adds: “If you’re talking about it, we’re talking about it, and we want listeners to agree or disagree with us and get involved by text, Facebook or Twitter to be part of the show.”

Emma joins Garry on kmfm Breakfast between 5.30am and 9am from Monday, June 2.
