Fire service called to Clowes Wood, Radfall Road, Whitstable

Emergency crews tackled deep-seated fires that were contained to an area that measured 30 square metres.

Firefighters were called to Clowes Wood on Radfall Road, Whitstable, just before 8.30am today.

It took officers over an hour to put it out.

Following the incident Kent Fire and Rescue Service is renewing its appeal to the public to avoid starting camp fires and bonfires in woodland areas and to take extra care when disposing of cigarette ends to help prevent them.

A spokesman for the force said: "If anyone spots a fire in the countryside, please report it as soon as possible, giving as much detail about the location as possible, so that it can be dealt with before it spreads.

"In addition, please report any information about illegal fire setting activities and those responsible to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

It is not thought any injuries were reported.
