Beach huts destroyed in fire on Tankerton slopes near Whitstable

Firefighters were called to the seaside just after midnight after beach huts were set alight in a suspected arson attack.

Crews went to the Tankerton slopes near Pier Avenue and found two huts on the upper tier well alight.

Firefighters used a hose reel to put the blaze out.

Their contents were destroyed.

The fire is believed to have been started deliberately.

Police have launched an investigation.

Investigating officer DS Steve Rudden said: "The paths by the beach huts in Tankerton are popular with walkers and we would ask anyone who was in the area, either at the times mentioned or earlier in the evenings to contact officers.

"Fortunately nobody was hurt as the huts were unoccupied at the time."
