A man who kicked a greyhound to death on Whitstable beach has pleaded not guilty to causing unnecessary suffering, a court heard.

Mark Jones-Reid, 48, of Woodpecker Glade, Rainham, denied one charge of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal at Canterbury Magistrates Court earlier today.

The RSCPA launched the prosecution in May following the death of Dougal on a stretch of beach in Seasalter.

Prosecutor Sophie Read says Jones-Reid used excessive physical violence but his defence team say he acted to protect his dog and wife.

The case will be resolved in a two-day trial in Canterbury, although a date has not yet been set.

As many as nine witnesses are expected to give evidence during proceedings. Jones-Reid was released on unconditional bail.
