Kentish Flats off-shore wind farm extension starts producing power

An extension to the Kentish Flats off-shore wind farm is almost complete after all 15 newly-built wind turbines started producing power.

The £150 million extension, which started in May off the Whitstable and Herne Bay coast, will serve 35,000 homes.

The first turbine started producing electricity two weeks' ago but all 15 electric windmills started working on Saturday.

Vattenfall project manager Matthew Green said: "It’s a little over two weeks since we generated power and exported to the grid from the very first turbine; now all 15 MHI Vestas turbines are generating low carbon power.

"To achieve full power so quickly and to do it safely is a strong performance from all of the technicians and engineers involved."

Final testing of the turbines is continuing.
