Whitstable Town joint-boss Danny Ward tells fans and officials to enjoy Ryman League Division 1 South form and not focus on negatives

Joint-boss Danny Ward wants Whitstable fans and officials to focus on the positives and enjoy the moment after their surge towards the play-off places gathered pace.

Saturday’s memorable 3-1 win at title-chasing Faversham not only provided Town with a new high point of the season, following their 3-2 success at play-off bound Folkestone but also enhanced the Oystermen’s own top-five credentials.

Ward said: “This is up there with the win at Folkestone as the highlight of the season so far. It might be top, they were right up there and had won six games in a row and we turned them over on their own patch.

“It was an enjoyable game, I’d have paid to watch us. We were solid all over but played some fantastic football and it could have been more. It was an enjoyable three points but the lads moan at me for saying it, it’s just another three points.”

He added: “What is amazing to me is that people are still telling me, even this week, that it’s a shame we don’t play more attacking football.

“We’ve conceded eight in our last six games and scored 18 – and that’s not enough for some people. We’ve taken 16 points from 18 and people are saying we’re not attacking enough?

“The problem with runs like this and getting up towards the top-six is that people’s expectations go up and up. They need to settle down a bit.

“This is still a work in progress. People need to smile, look at the progress we’re making, enjoy the wins when they come and the run we’re on. In football, you never know what’s around the corner so you have to enjoy the good spells while you can.”

Victory over Chipstead at the Belmont on Saturday (3pm) could close the four-point gap to Worthing, sat fifth and in the final Ryman League, Division 1 South play-off spot but Ward added: “When we took over, we were told the only thing was that the club didn’t want to be looking over our shoulder in March.

“Well, three more points from our last 14 games should see us safe from relegation but maybe we should aim for four to be on the safe side!”

Ward expects to shuffle his pack on Saturday, adding: “I think we’ve kept the same team for the past six games but there will be changes this week. We have some decisions to make.”
