Whitstable goalkeeper Luke Watkins hopes to be fit for the Ryman League, Division 1 South trip to Worthing on Saturday.

The Belmont No.1 was taken off with concussion, after being hurt early in the second half during the 2-1 Robert Dyas League Cup home defeat by neighbours Herne Bay on Tuesday night.

Joint manager Danny Ward said: “Luke slid out to claim the ball and was then hit on the back of the head.

“I spoke to him on Wednesday and he was fine and we hope he will be all right for the weekend.”

Watkins’ injury came on a night when defender Ashley Ulph lasted only 35 minutes and Ollie Gray was taken off at half-time, both suffering ankle problems.

Ward added: “It was Ashley’s first game of the season, having not kicked a ball since injuring the other ankle in a pre-season friendly at Thamesmead and Ollie was hurt when he went over on it (his ankle).”

Injured duo Tom Loynes and Nick Treadwell missed the Bay game, with Ward adding: “We rested them and hopefully they will be ready for the weekend.

“Jim and I won the League Cup with Ramsgate but hope we have got bigger fish to fry this season.”
