The force has confirmed it was called shortly after 6.30am to Churchfield Way after the discovery of a possible wartime ordnance, which was confirmed to be an unexploded grenade.

“Officers attended along with an explosive ordnance disposal team from the Ministry of Defence, who have dealt with the object,” a spokesperson said.

“The road was closed for a short time to allow the safe recovery of the object.”

Ashford Borough Council leader and ward councillor Noel Ovenden told KentOnline: “As far as I understand, it was an unexploded ordnance found in a bin.

“Most of the cordon has been lifted.
