Loud bang in Ashford confirmed as controlled hand grenade explosion

A loud bang which rocked a neighbourhood came from the controlled explosion of a wartime hand grenade, it has been confirmed.

The small bomb was found in Highfield Road, Ashford, at 10.22am on Sunday and was disposed of by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in the early afternoon.

The resulting boom was heard in areas close to the Crooksfoot Tesco and led to confusion over where it had come from.

The noise was captured by Danika Hawkins on her doorbell camera in the Hinxhill Park estate, opposite the supermarket.

The 22-year-old previously told KentOnline: “I was very shocked.

“It was so loud it woke one of my children up from their nap.

“I thought I’d check to see if my doorbell caught anything, and luckily the postman drove past as it happened.”

Now, the MoD has confirmed that teams were called to the area.

A spokesperson said: “An Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was called out to an item of possible ordnance in the Ashford area at the request of police.

“The EOD Operator declared the item to be a hand grenade, which was subsequently disposed of in a safe manner.”

A police spokeswoman added: “Kent Police was called at 10.22am on Sunday following a report of possible wartime ordnance in Highfield Road, Ashford.

“Officers attended along with an EOD team from the Ministry of Defence, who dealt with the object.”
