The unwanted road markings were caused after a rubbish truck collected a refuse bag that included an unopened paint can.

The unknowing workers then activated the lorry's crushing mechanism, which caused the can to crack, leaking paint onto the road as the team drove on.

A council spokesman said: "We would like to remind residents that unused paint cans can only be taken to your nearest Household Waste Site to be disposed of and not placed in your waste bins.

"This was after a road in Singleton was covered in paint today when an unemptied paint can was compacted by the truck resulting in damage.

"The Kent County Council website states that they would prefer the paint to be dry and hardened before taking it to the site.

"We have also spoken to KCC today who state they have had to change how they collect paint at the site due to legalisation change by the Environment Agency.

"Paint has to now be separated on site and residents will be advised with area to place it when they attend".
