A devastating fire at a tyre recycling plant has finally been extinguished more than three days after it started, the fire service has confirmed.
Firefighters have been working around the clock on the blaze on Cobbs Wood Industrial Estate in Ashford since Tuesday.
Three fire engines remained at the site last night and today but are finally due to return to their stations after it was confirmed there were no hotspots left.
A fire service spokeswoman said: "Firefighting work is now complete at Cobbs Wood Industrial Estate, with the remaining crews expected to leave shortly.
"The advice to close windows and doors has now been lifted.
"Thank you to local residents and businesses for your patience during this incident."
The cause of the fire, which saw one person taken to hospital with burns and smoke inhalation, has not yet been established.
At its height, 15 fire engines and more than 60 firefighters attended and a huge plume of smoke could be seen as far away as Seasalter near Whitstable.
A large number of tyres at the epicentre of the inferno, which residents say gave it a distinct and widespread odour.
Nearby homeowners reported having black, oily spots land on their clothing - a phenomenon also experienced by children playing on slides in their gardens.
