Newtown underpass near Ashford International Station revamped by Lionel Stanhope and Network Rail

New pictures show the transformation of a dingy underpass next to an international station.

The Newtown underpass in Ashford has been painted yellow and green to reflect the colours of Ashford Borough Council (ABC) and Southern Railway, as part of a regeneration project to improve the look of the site.

Schoolchildren, rail staff and Ashford MP Damian Green attended an unveiling ceremony this afternoon.

Work to transform the dark walkway - which sits under the railway line between Ashford International Station and the Designer Outlet - commenced earlier this year.

Artist Lionel Stanhope has been busy painting a colourful mural over the dull brickwork - in a scheme which has been brought to life by Network Rail, the Designer Outlet and ABC.

A vintage style railway sign was the first design to be painted on the walls of the new-look underpass.

Students from the North School - who pass through the underpass daily - have also been involved in the project.

Pupils were asked to submit their ideas and the winning design has been replicated on the walls of the underpass.
