Traffic lights installed in Hythe Road, Ashford, as drivers hit with long delays due to gas leak

Drivers are facing long delays on a main route due to a gas leak.

Motorists using Hythe Road in Ashford have been hit with long queues since yesterday afternoon after SGN engineers installed temporary traffic lights on the stretch.

They have been added near the junction of Gordon Close just 300 metres away from the Esso petrol station.

It has resulted in heavy queues across the area including during rush-hour when one driver said they had been “pretty much stuck for more than half-an-hour”.

A spokesman for SGN says it is too soon to say when the lights will be removed.

“We're investigating the source of a reported gas escape in Hythe Road, Ashford,” they said.

“For everyone's safety, we've installed temporary two-way traffic lights around our work area. We'll also be working extended hours where possible.

SGN is also carrying out works in Newtown Road and part of Elwick Road near the Elwick Place leisure complex.
