Officers were called to the shop at 2.35am to a report of a burglary at the store in which several electrical items were reportedly stolen.

The front window of the two-storey 'at home' branch had been smashed and shoppers arriving this morning reported being turned back around by workers in high-vis jackets.

Police say inquiries are ongoing into the incident.

The two storey Ashford branch, which created 125 jobs when it first opened in 2013, delayed reopening after the initial lockdown, sparking fears it may shut permanently. But it later reopened to customers again on July 30.

A spokesman for John Lewis said: "I can confirm our Ashford shop was broken into during the early hours of this morning and we are working with the police to investigate. The shop is open for business as normal."

Anyone with any information is urged to call Kent Police on 01843 222289, quoting crime ref 46/190346/20.
