Kent fire crews warn of extension lead dangers after Ashford blaze

Firefighters are warning residents to take extra care when using extension leads following an outhouse blaze.

Crews were called to Beaver Lane, Ashford, today shortly after 3.20pm when the occupants discovered the fire after the electric tripped out and went to investigate the cause.

The fire is believed to have started after the extension lead, which was connected to a tumble dryer, melted, leading to a small fire which spread to rubbish.

Those inside quickly closed the door to the outhouse and got out of the property, before calling 999. When crews arrived the isolated the power and put the fire out using a bucket of water.

One person was treated by SECAmb on the scene and taken to hospital for checks.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service crew manager Neil Jones: "This was a very near miss, and fortunately the fire was detected before it had a chance to take hold and spread.

"Due to the actions of the occupant in closing the door on the fire, smoke damage was kept to a minimum too.

"However, it does highlight the need for residents to ensure that any extension leads that they use are in good working order and are not overloaded, as they can overheat and catch fire."
