Fire crews called to fire involving straw bales in Olantigh Road, Wye

Villagers are being advised to continue keeping their windows and doors closed due to smoke in the area.

It comes after a fire involving straw bales began in Olantigh Road, Wye shortly after 4.15pm yesterday.

Two fire engines attended the scene where crews worked to bring the blaze under control by putting in place a controlled burn strategy throughout the evening.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service says efforts to control the blaze are still ongoing.

A spokesperson says: “People living or travelling near the Olantigh Road area in Wye this morning are still being advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke coming from smouldering straw bales.

“Crews maintained a watching brief overnight and used main jets to reduce the risk of any fire spreading.

“The controlled burn strategy is still in place and firefighters will continue to monitor the progress.
