Firefighters rescue toddler from Lidl trolley

Firefighters rescued a toddler today after he became stuck in a supermarket trolley.

Crews were called to Lidl in Ashford after the 16-month boy caught his leg inside the bars.

His dad is now awaiting an X-ray on his son's leg, but has thanked Kent Fire and Rescue who had to cut the trolley apart to release the distressed tot.

His dad, who did not wish to be named, told KentOnline this afternoon: "The blue plastic on the trolleys is too wide and allows little people to turn themselves around.

"Then he got his foot through the bars somehow as I was taking the trolley to the trolley bay.

"So I turned around and went back into store and asked staff for assistance. The manager came out, and escorted us into staff area and called for the fire brigade who came out and cut the trolley apart.

"In my opinion the trolleys are dangerous.

"I would like to say a big thank you to the fire crew.

"These trolleys have a design fault that needs addressing as the seats are different to UK supermarket trolley seats and allow toddlers to twist around unlike UK trolleys."

A Lidl spokesman said: "We were very sorry to hear of this incident and can confirm that our store employees did everything they could to assist.

"Safety is of paramount importance to us. All Lidl UK trolleys comply with relevant safety standards and this is the first time that we have been made aware of such an incident."
