Ashford: Part of A2070 to shut this weekend as part of junction 10a project

A footbridge in Ashford has been demolished as work continues on a £104 million motorway project.

The A2070 is closed in both directions while work continues to bring down the structure and clear the rubble.

This forms part of a huge scheme to build a new motorway junction on the M20, which was given the go-ahead in December.

The A2070 has been closed from 4am between its junction with Barrey Road and the M20.

The closure will remain in place until 4am tomorrow (Sunday).

Access to Barrey Road for residents, stores and the lorry park will remain open along the A2070 from Orbital Park Roundabout during the demolition.

There will be no access to Junction 10 from Orbital Park Roundabout, and a diversion through Ashford town centre to Junction 9 via the A2070 and A2042 will be in place.

As part of the upgrade, the road was reduced to a single lane in both directions on Monday.

This closure will remain in place, alongside a 40mph speed limit, until work is finished in 2019.

Highways England's Thomas Selby, project manager for the new junction, said:

"We are making good progress on building this new junction for Ashford, which will bring real benefits to the town.

"As part of the work, we are realigning the A2070 to tie in with the new junction and we are also improving access to the nearby retail park.

"To do this we need to replace the Church Road footbridge.

"Until it is rebuilt we will install a temporary surface crossing controlled by traffic lights.

"We appreciate people's patience and will try and keep disruption to a minimum."
