Hundreds of people turned out to watch Dover's carnival procession make its way around the town yesterday evening.

The sun shone, colourful characters and carnival queens lined up, and the crowds waiting for the procession to arrive in the Market Square were able to watch Andy Murray making history at Wimbledon on the Big Screen.

The procession was led by Miss Dover and her court, with the Dover Air Training Corps Band not far behind them.

Dover Dance Academy and Dover Cheerleading Academy put on some energetic displays all the way around the route, the ever-popular Popeye, alias Ron Everett, was there as always, and a number of local businesses, including Cab For 1, the Pass Driving School and Salon 77 took part, too.

Staff from the Dover Marina Hotel and Ramada Hotel had chosen a Christmas theme this year, despite it being one of the hottest days of the year, and their float was complete with Father Christmas and two snow machines.

The Samaritans were celebrating their 50th anniversary and carnival queens from other towns included Hastings, Teynham, Faversham and Sittingbourne.

Full report and picture spread in this week's Dover Mercury.
