'Lucky' man escapes as bedding catches fire

A man had a narrow escape after his bedding caught fire in the night.

The man, believed to be 18, was roused from his sleep by a smoke detector which had recently been fitted by Kent Fire and Rescue Service after a previous incident at the property.

KFRS were called to the scene on Cheriton Road, Folkestone at 4.30am this morning after a neighbour alerted them to the fire.

Two appliances responded and the fire, believed to have been sparked by a faulty plug socket, was quickly brought under control.

Speaking about the incident KFRS crew manager Heather Heath said: "I honestly believe that if he hadn't have had a detector fitted the young man may well have lost his life."

"I can't stress enough the importance of having this vital safety measure in place in every home."

To have a smoke detector fitted free of charge at your property call Kent Fire and Rescue on 0800 9237000
