Three of the county’s MPs are backing a Brexit compromise deal that could mean implementation would happen in 2021.

The plan named the ‘Malthouse Compromise’ is being seen as one that could bring together Brexiteers and ‘remainers’ and is being led by Ashford MP Damian Green.

Mr Green is an ally of the Prime Minister and colleague Kit Malthouse.

Under the proposed amendment to the Withdrawal Agreement, the government would replace the controversial Northern Ireland backdrop. Instead, there would be a statement that political agreement had been reached on arrangements based on existing customs procedures - meaning there would be no need for a hard border.

It comes as the Prime Minister is to start talks with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn today in what is being seen as the last throw of the dice for Theresa May.

The proposals have drawn support from Eurosceptic South Thanet MP Craig Mackinlay, who admits that he is backing the idea reluctantly and is doing so because of “the shameful Bill before us today.”

He tweeted: “People tell me on #Brexit - ‘just get it done’.

I agree, hence I support a deal that replaces hated #Backstop with an achievable solution for frictionless trade across the Ireland border under #MalthouseCompromise so I’ve signed this amendment to the shameful Bill before us today.”

Dover MP Charlie Elphicke has also signed the amendment.

However, when previously proposed, the compromise plan was cold-shouldered by EU officials who said the treaty could not be changed.
