Ashford mum died after falling from window, inquest hears

A young mum died after falling from her bedroom window, an inquest has heard.

Megan Aleks, 26, had been trying to perch on the first-floor windowsill at her home in Ashford to smoke when she fell out onto the ground below.

An inquest into the death of the mum-of-two heard that she had spent the evening of August 23 watching films and drinking wine with a friend before the tragic incident.

While her two-year-old daughter slept safely in a nearby room, she had gone to bed in the early hours while her friend went to sleep on a sofa downstairs.

Shortly before 3am, her neighbour reported hearing a scream and a "thud", and looked out of his window to see Ms Aleks lying in the alleyway at the side of the house.

Emergency services were called to the house in Repton Manor Road while the neighbour attempted CPR, but the young mum was declared dead at the scene.

Investigating officer Acting Police Sergeant Robert Linkins said that officers had roused Ms Aleks's friend, who stayed to comfort her young daughter.

When police inspected the bedroom, they found evidence of smoking, and a waist-high window that had been fully opened, despite having a restricting mechanism that had to be manually taken off.

"The window had a sliding latch that would stop it from opening too far, but this had been overridden or released to allow it to open all the way," APS Linkins told the court.

"We found a cigarette lighter on her bed, and tobacco and other smoking-related items around her on the ground."

He told the court that police had found no evidence of third party involvement or suspicious circumstances.

"This is utterly tragic, but solely that; a tragic accident," he said.

A post mortem examination found high levels of alcohol in the 26-year-old's bloodstream and urine, as well as a 'theraputic' level of Diazapam for which she had a prescription.

The findings led area coroner Joanne Andrews to rule Ms Aleks' death an accident, saying she had "absolutely no concerns that (Megan) was suicidal or purposefully jumped out of the window."

Addressing members of Ms Aleks' family who appeared virtually in court, she added: "In my view this was clearly an accident, and I am so very sorry for your loss.

"I know this has been a very difficult process for you, but I hope that you have had some of the answers you need.

"Megan is clearly very much missed and very much loved by you all."
