Ashford: Bromley Green FC could get new facilities at Swan Centre Recreation Ground

Plans for new facilities to help “transform” a major community football club in Ashford are to be discussed by councillors next month.

An application to replace the current changing rooms at Swan Centre Recreation Ground has been submitted by Ashford Borough Council, who currently lease the site to Bromley Green FC.

Cabinet agreed last Thursday to progress the scheme – which will be determined by the authority’s planning committee in December – despite ward member Cllr David Smith (Ind) asking for a deferral.

He claimed the proposed structure is “huge” and would cause overlooking issues, adding: “While I still support we should work with Bromley Green, I’ve already had complaints coming in from residents.”

Cllr Smith raised concerns about the lack of local consultation, but was told the council had moved quickly because of a funding application for up to £600,000 from the Football Federation.

Officer Len Mayatt said: “It’s quite possible the amount of money we’re looking for will go to the February funding application panel at the Football Federation.

“In order to meet that timetable, it has been necessary to get the designs to a point that the planners can see them and permission be approved.

“The Football Federation looks for certainty, such as whether planning permission has been granted, when they review the application – otherwise there is a danger for them.”

The total cost of the project is said to be £720,000 and would include a new changing block with four changing rooms, toilets, showers, a storage space, and a social area ready for the 2019/20 season.

Bromley Green currently has 17 teams – including mixed-gender and disabled squads – totalling nearly 300 players.

Cllr Smith was encouraged to speak to council planners, as well as being told he could raise his “strong views” on “planning matters” at next month’s committee meeting.

Portfolio holder for culture Cllr Mike Bennett (Con) said: “This project will transform facilities and possibly the town’s largest football club.

“(£100,000 of) s106 money has been agreed at a previous cabinet – this item is to allow officers to agree lease terms, Football Foundation funding, and proceed with the planning application.”
