Plumes of smoke seen after fire in Hurstford Lane, between Little Chart and Charing near Ashford

Firefighters have left the scene of a blaze at a car breakers’ yard after an operation lasting more than 21 hours.

Huge plumes of smoke were seen from the site in Hurstford Lane, between Little Chart and Charing, near Ashford ,from around 7.15pm yesterday (May 3)

Ten fire engines and two bulk water carriers were sent to the scene and crews, wearing breathing apparatus, worked to extinguish the flames.

No injuries have been reported.

In an update at 7am today (Sunday), the fire services said crews had made good progress throughout the night, and neighbours are no longer advised to keep windows and doors closed.

A spokesperson said: “At the height of the incident 10 fire engines and two bulk water carriers were in attendance and crews, wearing breathing apparatus, used main jets, hose reel jets and compressed air foam system to extinguish the flames.

“There are still three fire engines at the scene damping down and checking for hotspots.”

In a further update at midday, they said two fire engines remained at the scene, which had eventually left at 4.30pm.

Residents on social media said the fire was at the Bridgend Recycling car breakers.
