Sumo Donuts opens new branch in Willesborough, Ashford, joining existing shop in Canterbury’s Palace Street

A doughnut shop selling indulgent treats such as a ‘brownie bomb’ and Eton mess flavoured concoctions has opened a second branch in Kent.

Sumo Donuts is expanding in the county, with a store at Willesborough Industrial Park off the A2070 in Ashford joining its Palace Street spot in Canterbury.

And it will be a busy year for owners Su and Mike Molnar, with a venue opening in Ely Court in Tunbridge Wells in six weeks and another in Folkestone’s Creative Quarter this summer.

The brand, which launched in Canterbury in November 2022, is known for innovative flavours, as well as classics such as a doughnut topped with a homemade brownie, and one which resembles the famous pink treat from The Simpsons topped with sprinkles and a biscuit showing main character, Homer.

With more than 25 years of experience in the catering industry, Su says the couple's passion for handcrafted treats has driven them to opening their second shop.

She explained: “We had so many customers travelling from Ashford to our Canterbury shop that it only made sense to bring Sumo Donuts closer to them.

“Plus, with family ties in the area, it felt like the perfect fit.

"We always planned to expand the business, but have been careful to let customer demand guide growth.”

Originally from Bedfordshire, the couple have lived in Rough Common on the outskirts of Canterbury for three years.

Their new venture, which will also be their baking headquarters, is open from 11am until 4pm on weekends.

Alongside the husband-and-wife pair will be a further two employees at the branch - which will also offer click and collect and delivery options.

A soft launch saw dozens of excited customers attend the shop at the weekend, ahead of its official opening this Saturday.
