The George in Bethersden, near Ashford, wins coveted CAMRA Pub of the Year branch award two years after reopening

A much-loved community-run pub has been recognised with a coveted award just two years after it was rescued from closure.

The George in Bethersden, near Ashford, has been named Pub of the Year by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) for the Ashford, Folkestone and Romney Marsh branch.

It marks a remarkable turnaround for the historic 300-year-old inn.

Closed in 2020 and left shuttered for more than two and a half years, the village pub faced an uncertain future until residents rallied together in an ambitious bid to buy and restore it.

After raising more than £300,000, bolstered by a government match-funding scheme, the community officially reopened The George on May 26, 2023.

Sarah Collyer, chair of the CAMRA branch, praised the pub’s beer and spirit of community.

She said: “The criteria primarily is about the beer - that’s the most important thing as a CAMRA member. The beer has to be top-notch.

“But we’re also looking at whether the pub upholds CAMRA values: Is it part of the community? Is the décor welcoming? Do you get that feeling you want to stay for a second or third pint?

“It's all of those things that go into making Pub of the Year."

The journey to saving the venue began in 2021, when it was put up for sale after a prolonged closure during the Covid-19 pandemic.

With fears it could be lost to redevelopment, a group of determined residents formed The George Community Ltd and began a major fundraising push.

Through events and a community share offer, villagers were able to stump up the cash needed to purchase and refurbish the pub.

Robin Draper, chair of The George Community Ltd, said the award is a testament to the dedication of local supporters and volunteers.

“We’ve been followed closely by CAMRA, and I think it’s because we’ve got people who really know how to look after their beer,” he said.

“Now, to be awarded Pub of the Year for our area is very exciting.

“The pub simply wouldn’t be here without the community who come regularly and keep it afloat.”

Initially reopening as a ‘wet pub’, The George now serves food daily - including traditional Sunday lunches - and has firmly re-established itself as a village hub.

Weald MP Katie Lam, who visited the pub to celebrate the award, called the recognition “well-deserved”.

She added: “It feels fantastic. The vibe here is wonderful.

“I come to The George quite a lot - it’s an amazing community-run pub.

“There are so many shareholders who live here in the village, and everyone really supports what The George is doing.

“The food and drinks are fantastic, and this CAMRA award is just the icing on the cake.”
