Firefighters and a rescue charity are attempting to reach a stranded cat on a railway line.

Members of the RSPCA arrived at the scene at about 5pm in a bid to save the animal during the freezing conditions.

But luck has so far not been on their side as the cat remains several metres below, near the Elwick Place Car Park.

It was first spotted by passerby Robert Doughty at about midday.

The animal is believed to have remained near the tracks since, although it is understood to have been given food.

Network Rail and Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) will reportedly attempt to rescue the moggie from about 1am when the overhead power lines can be switched off.

It is not yet known if the animal has an owner.

Speaking at about 8pm tonight, a spokesperson for KFRS said: “Our crews are responding to reports of a cat stranded above train lines at Ashford railway station.

“We’re working with Network Rail High Speed to formulate a plan to rescue the cat and minimise disruption as quickly as possible

“We would ask any members of the public to please avoid the area while we work at the scene. Thank you.”
