Ex-County Square security guard Tyler Plumridge stripped then smashed glass in bridegroom's face at Ashford's Singleton Barn

A security guard stripped off his clothes and smashed a glass into a bridegroom’s face during a weekly pub quiz night.

Tyler Plumridge, 28, necked three bottles of wine and two cans of beer then got in a row with Scott Richards and his friends.

Plumridge stripped to his boxers and flung the weapon into Mr Richard’s face – the day before his wedding - after being accused of stealing from the group’s table.

Permanently scarred Mr Richards required 14 stitches and an operation to remove glass from his eye, Canterbury Crown Court heard.

The County Square security guard pleaded guilty to Grievous Bodily Harm at a previous hearing, following the attack at Ashford’s Singleton Barn.

Plumridge was drinking alone at his Manorfield home before taking off for the 17th Century pub in Hoxton Close for more alcohol.

“Mr Plumridge approached (Mr Richards and friends) intoxicated and they allowed him to join them,” prosecuting barrister Eleanor Davies explained.

“When Mr Richards returned to the table he found there had been an issue with Mr Plumridge taking items off the table – they had been returned I think.

“They asked him to leave, he didn’t, Mr Richards swore at him and Mr Plumridge took no notice.

“Mr Plumridge was asked to open his pockets, he did so, he stripped to his boxer shorts and threw the glass at Mr Richards.”

The court heard Plumridge drunk two bottles of wine and two cans of lager before going to the pub at about 9pm, where he drunk another bottle of wine.

Recorder Richard Thomas told Plumridge, who is of previous good character, he should be locked up but deserves a second chance.

“I think you rightly deserve to go to custody straight away.

“But I have been inspired by what I have read and what I have heard by the submissions made on your behalf.

“It is clear to me reading the letters from your family and employer that this was an action totally out of character,” he said.

Mitigating, Zander Goss said his client was “deeply remorseful and insightful” and no longer works as a security guard.

Dressed in a dark suit and tie, Plumridge didn’t take his eyes off the judge throughout the sentencing hearing.

Sat in the public gallery, his mother and sister became visibly upset as the judge addressed him. His father sighed in relief following the judge’s reprieve.

Plumridge was jailed for 12 months suspended for 18 months and ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work for Grievous Bodily Harm.

He must complete 10 rehabilitation days with probation and is already receiving help for alcohol abuse.

Plumridge must also compensate Mr Richards £1,000 in three months.
