THE hit summer movie Spiderman can be shown to under-12s at Ashford's multiplex cinema. That is the ruling of Ashford council's licensing committee which has said the fantasy film should be reclassified.

But the decision will have to go before the council on July 25, before Cineworld can show the blockbuster to the youngsters. Spiderman was given a 12 certificate by the British Board of Film Classification, but the committee has overruled this and instead categorised the film a PG-12. This means any child who is with an adult can see the film - although it was said not to be suitable for under-eights.

Last Thursday nine councillors watched the film, before making the decision on whether the fantasy violence was too graphic for young children. Staff at Cineworld, on the Eureka Leisure Park, are hoping they will be able to start showing the film with its new certificate in time for the summer holidays. If the council agree to the change, the re-classified film will be ready for viewing on July 26.
