Ashford: Thousands donated to Goat Lees Primary following arson attack

Teachers say they have been overwhelmed by the response from the community after their minibus was torched in an arson attack.

Pupils at Goat Lees Primary School in Kennington have had to start the term without a minibus after vandals destroyed their vehicle during the summer holiday.

But residents have donated £4,500 towards the cost of a replacement and teachers hope the new bus will be available in the new year.

Head teacher Teresa Adams said: "There are no new buses available to lease until next year, due to changes in emission regulations.

"We have found a second-hand minibus from an Ashford-based company and are in the process of sorting out the finer details.

"If we can secure a minibus, it will reduce the impact on the children and we hope to get a replacement by Christmas so seasonal activities can go ahead."

The minibus, which was parked in the school's car park in Hurst Road, was set alight in the early hours of Sunday August, 4.

Cars in Nine Acres, Hurst Road and Beecholme Drive were also among those gutted by the fires, which all happened within a one-mile radius.

Police say they have not made any arrests and inquiries are ongoing.

Children at the Phoenix Community Primary School in Belmont Road have also been affected by the blaze as the Goat Lees minibus was shared between the schools.

Ms Adams added: "Our friends and families within the community have amazed us with their generosity and we are well on our way towards our target.

"This would not have been possible without such wonderful support from so many well-wishers and we are very grateful."
