Travellers set up on Spearpoint Pavilion in The Ridge, Kennington, Ashford

Travellers have pitched up on a playing field.

Residents say travellers parked caravans, cars and commercial vehicles on Spearpoint Pavilion in Kennington, Ashford, yesterday afternoon.

Around 10 to 15 caravans and a number of other vehicles are reportedly on the site, which is also known locally as The Ridge.

Cllr Nathan Iliffe says Ashford Borough Council (ABC) is looking to move them on by the end of the day.

"Understandably residents have concerns and I have spoken to officers at ABC this morning. They deal with these situations every year in different parts of the borough," he said.

"The council is taking the appropriate action and hopefully aim to move them on by the end of the day."

The Kennington-ward councillor plans to review the security of the site once the travellers have left the premises.

He added: "My real concerns are how they got on there in the first place. We need to make sure the land is cleared up and review the field to make it more secure to ensure it doesn't happen again in the future.

"There are defences in place but it appears they were entering by a gate near the pavilion. We will need to look at this gate and make it more secure.

"It was a lovely evening yesterday and people were still going about their business. Footballs clubs were taking place at the other end of the field and residents were walking there dogs."

A council spokesman said: "We can confirm that we received a report about travellers arriving at the site in Kennington late yesterday afternoon.

"Arrangements were made to visit the site on Friday morning to assess the situation and confirm numbers.

"Council officers are working with police and appropriate notices have now been served and we anticipate that the situation will be resolved this afternoon."
