Mersham Stores, near Ashford re-opens after major makeover

A village’s only shop has reopened following a two-month refurbishment – with new owners hoping to turn it into a community hub.

The much-loved Mersham Stores, near Ashford, closed in November 2024 after previous owners Phillip and Lucy Payne stepped down after more than eight years behind the counter.

At the time, the Paynes said they were “incredibly sad” to be leaving, having become an integral part of village life.

After their emotional farewell, they relocated to Yorkshire to begin a new chapter.

However, within days of their departure, landlady Linda Johnson, who has owned the building for the past decade, confirmed she was already in talks with new occupiers — and hinted that the store would be given a much-needed facelift before reopening.

Now, following weeks of work, the doors to Mersham Stores officially opened yesterday – and the new owners have shared their vision for the shop’s future.

In a statement, they said: “After two months of refurbishment, your village shop has undergone a makeover like never before.

“One of our biggest upgrades is our all-new cosy seating area where customers can enjoy takeaway tea, coffee, cakes or fresh sandwiches.

“Built with the community in mind, we hope this will become a small meeting place for locals and somewhere dog walkers can grab a coffee to keep them warm.”

The team also highlighted their commitment to supporting local businesses by offering fresh products at affordable prices, with plans to showcase Kent-based suppliers wherever possible.

Despite no longer operating as part of the Post Office, the shop is still planning to offer a range of postal services and parcel deliveries.

Reflecting on the transformation, the new owners added: “We’ve uncovered and restored the original floor tiles dating back nearly 100 years and created a history photo wall to celebrate the shop’s rich past.

“We wanted to make the shop warm, inviting and a place you want to do your weekly shop.”

The store will be open from 8am-6pm Monday - Friday, 8am-5pm on Saturday, and 8am-12pm on Sunday.

However, it will remain closed on Sundays throughout March for further renovation works.

The reopening has been met with excitement from villagers.

Katie McCorkindle commented online: “Absolutely incredible. We shall support as often as possible. What a treasure of a shop this will be.”

Nicky Reed added: “Welcome to the village! An exciting week ahead and I am sure you will get great support from us all - the shop has been missed!”

The Paynes previously received a number of well-wishes from villagers after announcing their departure.
