They followed that by beating Hollands & Blair 3-1 on Tuesday night to climb to second place in the Southern Counties East Premier Division.

Ton raced into a two-goal lead inside 15 minutes against Elmstead thanks to Charlie Owen and Tom Scorer.

Ryan Philpott extended the advantage before the half-hour mark and scored again in the second half after the visitors replied.

Boss Scorer stressed before the game the result was more important than personal achievements and Ton delivered.

“I think the most pleasing thing was how we started the game,” said Scorer, whose side have drawn lower-league Rochester United in the first round on October 18.

“Performance-wise in the first half an hour, we were brilliant.

“We didn’t go into the game underestimating Elmstead.

“Despite how you want to prepare for games, sometimes, mentally, some players can’t get past that we’re in a league above them-type mindset.

“So the fact we maintained our standards and set about doing everything correctly in the opening stages of the game was really pleasing.

“The only frustrating thing was that we didn’t then maintain that for the rest of the half but we made sure we killed the game off.

“At the end of the day, we got the job done and that was the most important thing.

“It was quite nice to have a different focus from the league because we have set our expectations relatively high within the group this year and we’ve put ourselves in a good position with how we’ve started the campaign.”

Kennington continued their flying start in the league by coming from a goal down to beat Hollands & Blair 3-1 at Homelands.

Philpott cancelled out Joe Thomas’ opener and late goals from Alfie Giles and Kaelem Sobhee-Turner secured the win.

Ton are are two points behind leaders Bearsted going into Saturday’s game at Erith & Belvedere.

“The fact we’ve got those points on the board makes a significant difference to the environment and the mentality of the group,” said Scorer.

“What’s key is ensuring we maintain that because we showed great glimpses last season of being able to put results on the board and put in performances that demonstrated we are a side that can compete at the top half of the table.

“I think the main thing for us this year is being able to transfer that into this season and do it with a bit more consistency.

“So, while we’ve had a good start, it doesn’t really count for anything if we don’t continue to do it on a consistent basis.

“Ultimately we’ve just got to keep making sure that we’re putting in the performances.

“Hopefully we can continue to enjoy putting points on the board and seeing where it takes us.

“We’re in a healthy position but we’ve got to maintain that.”
