Imogen Amos from near Ashford claims age-group world record at Vienna HYROX event in Austria

Imogen Amos has become a HYROX world-record holder.

The 23-year-old claimed the record within the 16-24 age-group open category at last month’s Vienna HYROX event as she timed 1hr0min10sec.

She was the sixth-placed female finisher, behind fellow Brit Sophia Parvizi-Wayne (57.36) - also breaking a world record - as well as an Italian athlete and three home competitors in Austria.

HYROX is a combination of running and work-outs and while Amos, from Wye, near Ashford, had set her sights on a world-record attempt last summer, it was something which she had put firmly to the back of her mind.

She explained: “When I didn’t get it the second time, I kind of forgot about it so it happened when I was least expecting it.

“I didn’t go there for that. I got a four-minute personal-best time - I didn’t think I’d even get close to that!

“To get that much of a personal-best time and the under-24 world record, that was a good highlight from the trip.”

Amos went into the competition having started February by coming third overall and first in her category on her PRO debut at Turin HYROX in 1:09.20, only finishing behind British winner Lucy Davis, who timed 1:04.08, and home athlete Gloria Corbetta. She clocked 1:05.50.

“It was really cool,” Amos reflected. “Normally, I’m not a confident person.

"I don’t believe in myself enough - I believe in everyone else - and I think everyone else is better than me. But, for the first time, I thought I could actually go and win this.

“The whole week before, I was thinking I feel confident enough to go there and win it. Obviously, you always doubt yourself a bit but I went in feeling pretty confident.

“It just went really well. People go out really fast - but I know I’m a good runner.

"They just all go out way too fast so I never go with them.

“I always trust I’m doing the right pace because I know I’m the strongest runner out of most people that do HYROX, anyway. I was probably third when I came into Ski[Erg] and then left the Ski in probably second or third place.

“I did the sled push and, on the second run, I caught up with first place [in my age category].

“I just ran with her because I didn’t want to overtake her.

“Then, I came out of the sled push on her shoulder and, when we had got to the sled pull, I overtook her - and that was it, really.

“I got a massive lead on everyone. When I came onto the wall balls, the final station, the second lady came in when I was on my 50th wall ball.

“I finished about four minutes ahead of her.

“The whole atmosphere was really good. It was so good to get that time. I wasn’t expecting it.

“I came into the sandbag lunges and thought ‘I’ve got one more run, and the wall balls, after this so, obviously, I could be on for a massive personal-best’ but, also, I knew I could be near to the hour.

“I was a bit gutted I didn’t get under the hour mark.

“Where I normally train with the PRO weight, doing the 4kg ball, that was so light so I kept overshooting or getting in no reps.

“Obviously, I wasted loads of time there so I could have got under an hour.

“But I’ll just do that next time. I was very happy and it’s nice to get everyone’s support.

“That’s what is so good about the HYROX community with strangers coming up to you and saying how they followed you from Italy, and they’d seen you race before.

“You then get messages from people and it’s really nice. It’s just quite overwhelming.”

Amos is also embracing the chance to do battle on European soil.

“Vienna was lovely,” she noted. “It’s just good you get everyone there.

“There’s the best in Europe, trying to win the title.

"It was really good and there was lovely scenery.”

Amos is also pondering partnering up with coach Joe Bingham on home soil again.

She said: “I want to do as many PROs as I can.

“It’s just getting the time off work. London is coming up in Olympia in May.

“I might be doing mixed doubles again because, the lad I did mixed doubles with last time, he wants to do better than he did last time with me.

“He felt awful, where I kind of carried him the whole way.

“But I don’t know anyone else as fit as him. He just had a really bad day.

“So, we’re going to give that another go. It’s just hard where a lot of people do back-to-back races, but I just want to focus on one.

“I’d rather focus on one, rather than half-heart them both.”

While Amos continues to juggle her HYROX commitments with work, the middle-distance runner, who only took up competing in the fitness events around a year ago, still dreams of the opportunity to get sponsorship that will allow her to be involved in HYROX events full-time.

She has qualified for June’s HYROX World Championships in Chicago, but any plans to compete won’t come cheap.

On gaining additional support, Amos said: “Hopefully, I’m very close.

“Winning and getting the under-24 world record, that holds me in good stead to, hopefully, get more recognition.

“A lot of it is social media where maybe I need to be doing more. But I always kind of feel, if you’re that good, people will approach you.

“You shouldn’t put too much pressure on you going out of your way to do it because, if they want you, they want you.

“It does take time, but it’s just about getting my PRO time down.

“Maybe even if I can get Elite 15 qualification eventually, that’ll definitely show me to people a bit more.

“But I definitely feel like I’m heading the right way.”
