Manager Dan Scorer has mixed feelings about Kennington’s start to the season.
Ton won their opening two matches in the Southern Counties East Premier Division, beating Chislehurst Glebe and Tunbridge Wells, both 2-1.
But they fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup in between those results, going down 4-0 to Soul Tower Halmets, and also lost 4-0 to Faversham Strike Force in surrendering their 100 per cent league record on Tuesday last week.
They return to action after a blank weekend at home to Holmesdale this Saturday and make the short trip to Scorer’s old club Hythe on Bank Holiday Monday (both 3pm).
“It’s been a positive but frustrating start to the season,” said Scorer.
“We were absolutely delighted to get those first points on the board.
“We were really good value for our three points on the opening day, so that immediately takes off that pressure of chasing that first win through the first weeks of the season.
“I won’t touch too much on the FA Cup because it was what the scoreline suggested.
“We were disappointed with the performance but well beaten by a better side.
“It was nice to get a reaction to bounce back and get another important win in the league against Tunbridge Wells - three points that we fully deserved.
“And then we really let ourselves down away at Faversham Strike Force last Tuesday.
“We were outbattled for 90 minutes.
“Sometimes you can get through those games if your quality shines through but, to be honest, we were really poor.
“We misplaced passes, balls into the box had no quality and, defensively, all four goals were errors.”
Kennington have done their homework on Holmesdale, having watched them twice this season, including their 4-1 FA Cup defeat at Homelands landlords Ashford last weekend.
Scorer, whose side missed a penalty against Strike Force while only a goal down, is looking for a reaction.
“We now go into a big weekend,” he said.
“To put six points on the board at home already is a massive plus because we want to be a side that make it difficult for anyone to come to our ground.
“We’ve got the opportunity to do that again against Holmesdale, a side that we know relatively quite a lot about.
“But if we don’t do what we need to, then we’re not going to come away with anything.”
Scorer is looking forward to returning to Hythe, who are top after three games under new boss Ira Jackson.
“Fair play to Ira,” said Scorer.
“I thought they were going to get off to a good start because of the energy and intensity they’ll play with.
“I’m sure they’ll be looking to maintain the standards they’ve set early on in the season, so that’s going to be a really tough one and that’s now our local derby, so I’m looking forward to that.
“Hythe’s a club I played for as well, so it’s the first opportunity to go back there in a competitive sense.
“We could be in a position where we continue to be in that top five, or we could find ourselves right back amongst the sides at the bottom if we don’t put in the performances.
“We know what we’re capable of achieving, so it’s just about making sure we put it all into practice.”
